Default want to connect to cable internet from another room

i have a cable internet connection. but my computer room has no cable outlet. i don't want to run a cable cord through the house. can i connect with a wireless modem or something. it seems that everything i have read is for networking 2 or more computers.

can i connect my computer from across the house without the router being linked to a desktop computer?

does this make sense?

Sure can, I have my D-Link wireless router and modem in a different room then my two pc's and laptop. You'll need a wireless router and a wireless card for your pc, its easy to setup. Then you can put your pc anywere you want and not were a cable outlet is

thanks. i still have a problem though. here is what i did.

connected router to modem and computer like it said. connected wireless adapter card to same computer. and did whatever it told me to. then i want to unplug the router and modem from the computer so i can move it to the other side of the room. when i do this i lose the internet conection. other people are telling me i have to have the computer connected to the router. oh, it is wireless by the way. i am confused!

Heres what you should have, cable hard wired to modem, modem hard wired to wireless router. Wireless card installed in pc. thats it

make sure you bought a wireless router also for installation of the router you might need it connected to your pc too which is a pain!.

What router do you have?

i am using a linksys wireless g router and usb adapter. after messing around with it and spending a long time talking to someone i could barely understand on the helpline i couldn't get it to run higher than 1 mb/s (or something like that) so i disconnected it and went back to my modem. i guess i'll try again later!!
