i am trying to network my vista laptop and xp media center for file sharing. my xp machine is connected to my router netgear pre-N router. i would like the laptop to be wireles conected. i can get the file share to work but only when they are both plugged in to the router
what extra must i do to get the vista laptop to do the same wirelessly

I would proabably just buy a wireless access point and plug that into an open port on the router. Once you have that configured, you should be able to wirelessly view the machine.

Have you turned on network discovery on Vista? You need to do that in order to discover other network devices. Also make sure your wireless adapter supports UPnP (if not the network discovery won't work) and get the latest driver and install it.
