Default Verizon DSL online speed

I just got Verizon DSL online and it was annoying cause my computer didn't come with a NIC but I installed one. I don't know if the speed of my connection is good or not, I mean everything loads a lot faster than my 56k days but I still wonder. Can anyone tell me what can I do in my power to improve connection speed, and what are the factors in connection speed? I bought a really cheap NIC too, this one right here

Any help is well appreciated, thanks a lot.

There is NO WAY to "speed up your internet". The only way is upgrading to broadband or getting a faster package. The webaccelerators and stuff do not work.

Technically, you're correct. However, if you can cancel programs from access your computer ports, you will be able to _speed up_ you're internet, but NOT the connection itself.
