Default Using a sonicwall firewall with a 3com switch

Hi, new poster here.

I don't have much of a background in networking but I'm a programmer so I do most small networking jobs around the office. Currently we have our internet connection going through a linksys router, then to a 3com switch, then out to all of the offices and cubicles and whatnot.

We just got a sonicwall TZ 170. I got it working fine just connected to my computer, but what I want to do is swap it with the Linksys router. Would this be possible? I don't see why it wouldn't be. I tried simply connecting it, but it didn't work out. I'm guessing I'm going to have to configure the switch somehow as well. Is this correct?

I don't even know the IP of the switch and can't seem to find it. The guys who set up the network before I was around here apparently left absolutely no documentation. We don't even have the password of the linksys router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

You should be able to go to 3com's website and get the IP to access the switch. If the other guy didn't change the password its probably user name: admin, pw:admin. Provide the model and type of switch and router you have and maybe I can help more.

Switches genereally do not have an IP. Most switches are unmanaged which means they are simple and cannot be configured.

Even if you have a managed switch (which you would configure with a serial connection, not IP) you would not really need to configure it.

Thanks guys,

Now, according to the documentation for the Switch, it should have an IP and a web interface. I downloaded the 3com discovery software to try and find the IP but it came up with nothing.

What could be the problem? I don't see why I would not just be able to swap the linksys router with the sonicwall and connect to the web interface.

I should also add that I'm using a Sonicwall TZ 170, the router in place now is just a normal linksys BEFSR41 and the switch is a 3com Superstack 3 (3C16475)
