Default USB vs cardbus

Me again.

I was wondering if anybody knows what would be better: a cardbus or a USB adapter for wireless connection for a laptop. when you try with a USB adapter, do you need something else to get connected, or is only the USB adapter? I've seen that there are some devices that look like a modem wich also has a USB name. Are those needed for a USB adapter? Please, educate me since I have no idea.
Since it's a laptop, it would be better if you'd tell me wich would be better for traveling.

On the other hand, and by the way, I'd like to connect my playstation 2 to the net, and I know that I need an additional device, but, could I use the same USB adapter that I would use in a laptop, or I need to connect directly the PS2 to a modem?

I really appreciate replies.
