Default Urgent: Trying to install network for friend and I'm stumped!

I'm at a friends house right now trying to fix thier network up. In the end, he wants to be able to use his company laptop with a built in wireless network card (it's G band I assume, it's relativley new). But the wireless router doesn't seem to show up when I search for available wireless networks, so I want to access the BIOS (or whatever that page is called when you go to 192.168.1.1) to see if wireless options are selected. When I came over, he was using a direct connection from his cable modem to his computer through USB. I tested the connection with the USB, and everything was fine. Then I connected his Linksys SRX200 to the cable modem, and unplugged the USB connection, and then connected his computer to the new router via ethernet, but that didn't work. So then I connected his computer directly to his cable modem via ethernet, and that didn't work either. Are there some drivers he needs or what?? Note: The USB connection doesn't work while the ethernet cable is plugged in either. You have to unplug the ethernet cable to "activate" the USB connection.
Heres a dxdiag report:

Yes, you can't use both the USB and Ethernet connection at the same time, it's either one or the other.

Test out his Ethernet connection by plugging it again into the modem using a straight through cable, making sure that the Ethernet card is set to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS. Now just unplug the modem power for about 15 second and plug it back.

Does it work?

Then move on to plugging the router WAN port into the modem Ethernet port with a straight through cable. Unplug the modem again and plug it back. Plug the computer on to the LAN port of the router with a straight through cable.

Now open up a command prompt and type ipconfig /all and verify that you got an IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS. Take note of this information.

If you don't recieve any IP address from the router or your IP address is not what you expected and it gave you 169.254.X.X, please note that DHCP on the router must be enable to be able to recieve an IP automatically, you can try opening up command prompt and typing ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew

If you still can't recieve an IP, please download winsockxp, but backup your registry first before using it. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Now perform the following steps below.

1) ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1

Do you get a reply? If yes move on to step 2 if not don't proceed yet.

2) ping your IP address

Do you get a reply? If yes move on to step 3 if not don't proceed yet.

3) ping the default gateway

Do you get a reply? If yes move on to step 4 if not don't proceed yet.

4) ping the DNS IP

Do you get a reply? If yes move on to step 5 if not don't proceed yet.

5) ping 64.233.161.147

Do you get a reply? If yes move on to step 6 if not don't proceed yet.

6) ping www.google.com

Do you get a reply? If yes move on to step 7 if not don't proceed yet.

7) open up a web browser and go to www.google.com

Does it work? If yes you have Internet, if not you have a firewall issue or wrong configuration in the web browser.

Tell me which step you are stuck at.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunatly, I left his house before I had a chance to read your reply. Come to find out, it had nothing to do with the way I was trying to set everything up. My dad brought up the fact that maybe it has something to do with the wiring in the house and that he had too many splitters before the computer room and maybe that wasn't letting anything work off of the the router.
I told him, "If the desktop computer can work straight off the cable modem, there is no reason at all that the router shouldn't work as well." But, just for craps and giggles we put a table outside on his driveway and set up all the linksys stuff there because apparently thats where the first splitter in the wiring for his house was. And sure enough it all worked. The two laptops we had there (my dad's work laptop, and my dad's friend's work laptop) connected to the network without a problem). I assume that if we brought the desktop outside it would work too off an ethernet cable.
So now he's either going to call Comcast and get them to come rewire his house or he's going to do it himself. I'm glad that we were able to come to a conclusion on what was wrong, though. Thanks again for your help though, sorry I didn't get a chance to read it when I was there.

Interesting...

Well I have heard many story about cable issues concerning splitting the Internet connection too many time (more than once) will cause the signal to degrade.

But honestly I don't understand why the router would not work if a computer can work connecting directly to the modem. That's just one thing that puzzles me
