Default Telnet to UNIX server w/ my new router

My roommates and I recently bought a router so that we could eliminate a gateway computer for our cable internet connection. I used to have no problems using telnet to connect to my school UNIX server. Now whenever i do telnet 'server' I simply get a blank screen for a few seconds and then get disconnected.

I know unfortunately little about networking, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you know how to open up a port?

Also what kind of router, I am guessing it is some security blocking the telnet connection, like access-list or inspection firewall.

I tried opening up the telnet port for my computer, to no avail. I believe the problem may be with my ISP.... it took me months before to get them to put me out in DNS with my old hub, so now that my router has a different mac address, this may be the problem.

Its a linksys 10/100 router.
