Default Sharing without mapping new drives.

Hello,

I've just got a laptop last week and setup my first Network with a little help from Google.

I've got a desktop connected directly to a wireless router and my laptop is using a wireless card to connect. I've got them both talking with each other after some special firewall rules on both computer and one on my router.

This is my question. I'm wanting to share some extra folders (MP3's) on the desktop with my laptop. I right clicked the folders to share and went into Sharing and Security. They now have the hand under them showing them as shared on the network.

I still can only find them with the laptop by Mapping a Network drive. Is that how this is supposed to work. I have like 3 folders I want to have shared, but do I have to Map a Network Drive for all of them on the laptop?

I don't want to put the whole drive on the shared network. Just the specific folders.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Did try looking for the folders by going into My Network Places then on the left side click on view workgroup computers then click on your desktop computer and see if the folder is in there?

Thats the funny thing. The only computer that shows up on the Workgroups is my Laptop.

I can access the folders in question by creating the Mapped Drives but I'm not sure if there is something I did wrong in setting this up. It works but if I didn't set it up right there may be security issues. I just don't know. I can also exchange files in the Shared Folder, and I can print from my laptop on the Desktop Printer.

Just can't see those shared folders that I added from the desktop with out Mapping them.

Any other ideas?

Yes they are both Windows Xp Home. I have another computer with FreeBSD but its not part of the network.

I'm still able to share different files if I put them in the shared folders directory, but the extra folders that I selected on the C: drive only show up if Mapped. Same old story so far. It works but I would think there are other ways this would work.

Try turning off all your firewalls and firewalls on your router and see if that works because just maybe a firewall is doing something. But don't leave the firewalls off too long because we don't want to deal with a virus/spyware too.
