Default Server Hosting and IP Issues

Tech-Forums Members,

As a brief introduction, I am running a small website from home to build and release software. The homepage can be found here: www.scalerusoft.com

If you look through the site, reaching the section "The Cube", note that you have to be registered to see this section, you will find that I'm developing a free to use MUD, or online text game for those that aren't familiar with the term. The problem is thus: I cannot in any way get the server application to accept connections from outside my network.

Modem: Speedtouch 530
Connection: Bigpond Broadband

I've searched through the settings on the modem and have found only one issue in the diagnostics:

***

WAN> Connections> PPPoA_PPPoA> IP Connectivity
Ping Address = 172.30.207.24
Ping Address Description = Remote peer IP address (DNS was not reachable)

WAN> Connections> PPPoA_PPPoA> IP
Local IP Address = 143.238.118.122
Remote IP Address = 172.30.207.24
Other IP Addresses = Not Configured
Primary DNS = 144.140.71.30
Secondary DNS = 144.140.70.29

***

It seems that the remote IP address can't connect to the DNS, as explained in the diagnostics. However, this address, as well as the local address, cannot be "ping"ed, suggesting that I can't connect to the internet, which is obviously not the case. I've tried many things, which I won't suggest here as it may affect your thinking, to no avail. I'm desperately seeking suggestions for a solution, as I was planning on releasing a basic beta version this evening to test the server capacity. Any help is greatly appreciated and will speed the release of my MUD.

Regards,
The ScaleruSoft Team

csamuels,

Nothing happens, the connect action simply times out. The same occurs when the addresses are being "ping"ed.

csamuels,

I've disabled all firewalls running on this computer. Further information I forgot to add: The modem also runs as a router and is connected alongside 2 other computers on a hub, however this shouldn't really be a problem. Several months ago I did some work on a chat program which worked without any problems.

is NAT being implemented? if so, port forwarding would need to be setup.

csamuels,

I've set up so that all ports are forwarded to my computer, the NAPT options on the modem allow a server to be selected. I tried beforehand by forwarding the specific port, but that didn't solve anything either.

Are you sure you know what port the users are connecting over? The port's you have forwarded obviously should be the one's they are connecting to. Consider the one's their computers are configured for, not the one's you think they should connect to.

Thresh,

This is my own software package, and I have hardwired the port into the client application. It is still in testing at the moment, and therefore only the known port is being used. I will be trying a different modem in the week to come, hopefully this will prove that it is errors in the modem itself that is causing this problem.

I would recomend turning off the routing mode on the "modem" and using it as a bridge. After this I would purchase a real router (If your going to be using it for a buisness, you should get a good one )

Also, sometimes ISP's can block stuff out as well...
