Usually TCP port 25 for SMTP and TCP port 110 for POP3.

If using Exchange web access, then it needs SSL TCP 443 open

If you're using SSL, you'll probably need port 995.

I thought you said firewall, a router would be a little different than a firewall. You need port-forwarding if your server is behind the NAT router.

You also have to be more specific, what firewall are you talking about? Is it the software firewall on the 2003 server? or the firewall on the router? Is it a combination of software firewall on the server and the router? Brand & model of the router?

ok, obviously the router firewall is blocking it. Your router firewall does
SPI (What is stateful inspection? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary)
and MAC Address Filtering.
It sounds like the SPI is the thing causing you problems. Try changing a few settings in the firewall, i havent had an SPI firewall before, so i cant tell you what to change.
nehuz, hope that helps!
