Default problems with wireless router

i've been using a linksys wireless-b router model BEFW11S4 and i was having problems with it dropping the connection for both wired and wireless about twice a day. i would always have to reset the router and it was getting very agitating. so i decided to upgrade to a linksys wireless-g router with srx400 model WRT54GX4 hoping i would get much better performance. instead, i get a dropped connection for just wireless about every 10 minutes and i have to wait about 3-5 minutes for it to automatically reconnect. am i doing something wrong or is their something i can do to fix this problem?

The problem might not be with the router, if this is dropping connection via wires. The problem may be with your DSL or Cable modem.

Forgot to mention. Even though it's a new model, you still need to get a latest firmware updates. This is critical for all routers.

I don't know if this would help you, but a person who visted this forum before had this problem solve by cloning his MAC address.

spoke too soon. its still disconnecting on me. the only differenc ebetween this router and my old one is that this one will reconnect automatically but it takes like 5 minutes and its really annoying. its only affecting my wireless connection though, not my wired one. why is it doing this?

Happens alot with wireless communication devices. Even mines at home did this before I messed around with the router and adapter configuration. You can try some stuff on the router, like changing the channel I have mines at 6, but you can select from 1 to 11, if that doesn't work try disabling WEP or WPA and leave the connection Open for awhile just to see if it'll come back. There's this feature call preamble type which you can select from Long, Short or Mix. Long for reliable connection from far away or Short for performace up close. Mix is for both, I leave it at mix on mines.

On the computer side, you might want to check device manager. Right click on your wireless adapter go to properties, there should be an advanced tab. These setting here can be configured for performace and reliability. The only way you'll be able to see these setting is if you have the latest driver from the maker of the card, not the driver that was install by Microsoft. Verify which driver was install in the driver tab.

Right along with what Law is saying, I'd really like to reinforce changing the channel. If, when you scan for "Available Networks" and see more than one, study which wireless channels people are using around you. Just make sure that you are using a channel that is unlike what everyone else is using.

i've already disabled the WPA key because i was having problems connecting. i'm on channel 1 right now but i'll try and change it. also, i have a d-link wireless-g card on my computer, could that be causing a problem in any way because it's not linksys?

It's possible, but I can not tell you for sure. Sometime different manufacturers of wireless equipment don't interoperate with each other. Before you decide to change your wireless card, I would suggest doing every configuration and tweak you can find on the router and on the properties of the card just to be sure, because I have a buildin Intel wireless adapter on my laptop and a netgear access point and both are working without any issue now. I had to make some changes to the channel and wireless adapter properties.
