Default Is this possible(router to router)?

I have been helping someone I know get a network up and running. He has the router hooked up to a desktop and wants to get internet on his laptop. The problem is where he wants to pick up the signal, he is inside an all metal building. The metal interferes with the signal and he can't pick it up, even standing outside the building. He is only about 50 feet away from the router.

We are looking at buying an antenna that hooks up to the router and see if that will work. I wondered if that doesn't work, could he run an ethernet cable from the router that is hooked up to the desktop and run it inside the metal building and hook the cable up to another router? Would that send the signal out without being hooked up to a computer?

Yes, that's the correct idea.

I didn't think it was possible. I figured the second router would need to be hooked up to a computer.

Nope.
It's pretty much this idea.

circuit city sells broadband boosters. which may work if the signal makes it into the building AT ALL. i installed one for my mom which picks up from our office (it's inside her house) and it works GREAT. and it is (was lol) a very weak signal making it into the house.
if the signal doesn't allow him to connect at all in the metal bldg, then obviouslya range booster wont work.
and yes, he can get another router and connect the two, making sure the wireless router is where he wants to use his lappy and it will work fine.

Another thought, instead of having two routers, could I just hook the desktop up to the modem and hook the ethernet cable up to the modem and run it over to the second house?

What is the difference between the different types of ethernet cables?

The original idea is the best.

Okay, when we start working on this, maybe this weekend, I may be back here to ask for help setting everything up. This will be a learning experience for me. I have never used 2 routers before. How hard is it?

I just received the 200 foot of outdoor cat5e cable today so I hope we will start working on this in the next couple of days. I am really anxious to see how this will work out.

One thing I am worried about is I was unrolling some of it to make sure it worked by hooking it up to our router and my computer and I put a small kink in it. I hope I didn't damage it. Man that stuff is real easy to put a kink in it. I was being careful too.

BTW, soulphire, the link you provided does not work. Is says it is forbidden.
