| So I'm trying to set up a VNC, but to make sure it wasn't a VNC problem I tried to set up an apache server as well. Neither worked. I accessed my router and set up port forwarding. Then I went to whatismyip.com to get my external ip. I did a port scan of my external ip and the two ports for vnc (5800 for http and 5900 for the client) came up as open. A port scan of my internal ip also shows that these ports are open. Also, if I try to connect to my external, internal, or 127.0.0.1 via http or the viewer, I can connect perfectly. However, no one outside can connect. I can connect to this computer from other computers on my lan via external and internal IP. Even computers on a different subnet can connect via internal and external IP. But still no one from outside. My router is a Linksys WRT54G My cable modem is a Motorola SB4100 My ISP is Charter Communications So yah, Any ideas? |

| try (and remove it as soon as you have done) pointing the "DMZ Host" to the IP of the computer you wish to run VNC / Apache on, then try connecting to the ipadress of your internet connection (www.whatismyip.com) PLEASE NOTE using DMZ makes your computer at risk, I say try using DMZ purly to test if it is your router that has a problem. REMOVE the DMZ Port Rule after you have tested your computer! ![]()

| Probably not, I haven't tried VNC. TightVNC? Is there any security on TightVNC that will allow or disallow a certain host? might want to check that out on the feature. Another thing, what security applications do you have running on that host computer (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall)? Did you forward port 5800 and 5900 to the VNC server? Should point to the computer hosting the VNC server. |

| Assuming your VNC server is a host inside your network (rather than the router itself) make sure you forward the port to that host AND open the ports on the router. Some software will take of both when you set up the Port Forwarding. If you know the service is working on the host, then you know it is definitely an issue on the router itself. What are your Port Forwarding and Firewall options? (Without giving away too much about your network for your own security)

| Where are you using the viewer from? work place, school? Maybe they have the source port filter. If you connect the VNC server to the modem, open up command prompt and type ipconfig /all and verify the IP address. Note that if you get a private IP address instead of a public IP, which would mean the modem is acting as your NAT router, which is a bad idea since there isn't a feature to port forward in the SB4100 modem. If you get a public IP, then that's good. From another location, try and ping that IP address. Just to be sure you disable any security application (anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall) for testing it. On both side. |

| People can ping my ip just fine. Also, it isnt a problem relating to VNC because my apache server didn't work. Anyways, I was using the viewer from peoples home computers. About 3 different people tried to connect to me. I'm not sure on the privicy rules for this forum, but my ip is 66.189.64.108 EDIT: feel free to ping, port scan, ect. I included a screenshot of me scanning my ip; once via a website and once on my own. Completly different results. http://tinyurl.com/h7k43 |

| You think youre getting mix information? I tried pinging your IP, doesnt work for me. Maybe I ping at the wrong time? Anyways, are you getting that public IP on the VNC server when you do ipconfig /all or a different IP like a private one? And what's that program with the icon that looks like an eye between LANspy and AIM? |
