| Super Techie | Okay your computer won't recognize the router as new hardware. Reason being is you are connecting to your router through an ethernet cable. What you have to do to access your router is type in the default ip address in your Internet explorer address bar. So type 192.168.1.1 (usually what the default is) and type in admin for user name, and usually it won't have a password so just press enter. At this point you configure your router. There are a few ways of going about this, but the most efficient way i've found is to call your ISP and find out what the settings are and configure your settings accordingly. Most large ISP's have a tool you download and it will configure the router for you. Call your ISP and say you are connecting your modem to a router and need assistance. As long as it is a decently new router and they support it, they will walk you through the steps of bridging your connection, setting up the default gateway, and everything like that. I've found in general these steps vary from ISP to ISP and router to router, so i've always found it is easiest just to all up your ISP as ask them to give you the information. Hope this helps. |

| You can also can the router's manufacturer. I have a Linksys SRT54G and have had to call Linksys a few times to get it straightened out. Most of the time it was something I did but not every time.I had to set my modem as a pass through/ethernet bridge in order to allow port forwarding on my router because my modem also acted as a router. You may be having the same problem.

| Keep in mind some ISPs only want you to use the routers they rent/lease, or want to charge you more because you are runnning more than one computer through the connection.

Honestly all you do is bridge the connection so that your router leases out IP's instead of your modem, and your router needs to know what IP to get your Internet from (default gateway). It is really simple, just usually a pain because every ISP seems to be different, and every router has different options. | |
