| One line works, other dont My girlfriend got another computer for Christmas and a 5-port mini hub. She connected the computers to the hub, but the problem is only one connection works. I am a newbie at hubs and networking so I don't know much about them, but I was thinking that either the port is not open or its not sharing the connection correctly. If anyone has any suggestions, could they please post?
I gotta go over there today to try to fix it, so a fast reply would be appreciated. |

| both computer should have internet sharing installed. You install internet sharing on the first computer, from "add-remove programms", it should be a component of windows. after installing, it should generate a flopydisk, and you boot another computer with the flopydisk.

| Ok, I talked her through it and she turned on Internet Sharing and it said to insert the Windows 98 Second Edition cd. Well, fortunately......she dont have a disk, and I cant find mine.
So what would be another option?

| another option is to download a proxy server software, like wingate, um, some others but wingate is fine. I used to mess with it, when you install it it gives you the option to install server or client. you just install the server thing on the old computer and client on the new computer. I don't know if wingate is free or not... but you can get one for free here: http://www.52sy.com/SoftDown.asp?ID=1259
I hope it's in English...

| Also, where is the internet connection set up at. Is it plugged into the hub or is it plugged into a computer. Also what kind of internet connection is it.

| She has cable and its all connected to a 5-port mini hub. We asked someone else and he said it was because it was a hub and she needed a router instead. I don't know much about networking but I know the basics. We asked another guy and he said we needed to download some software from the Charter website. Ive heard so many things that its rediculous...

| You don't need to download any software. The easiest way to do this is going to be to buy a gateway/router and hook both PCs and the cable modem up to this. Check out the diagram......pretty easy stuff. And the networking device that I'm talking about is only $45 or so....maybe cheaper.

| so if I understand this correctly, you have a 5 port mini hub connected to the cable modem and then the 2 computers to the hub. Only one of the machines is working. Sounds like you have an IP issue. The router/hub issue sounds close to true, cause the router would assign IP's out to the machines.
Check the IPs on the two machine, because one will get the assigned IP from the Cable company and the other will get a reserved address. This is most likely the problem you are having. Proxy software will enable you to work, but a router is a better option, just cause it's simple. |

| If you have a basic setup as far as software and hardware (ie; no proxy run-through, no ICS, etc) then a hub will not work with two PCs....plain and simple. There is no IP address distinction from the cable modem and therefore, the IP address cannot be matched up with the correct MAC address for the destination PC. This is the job of the router. It will build that MAC address match once again and then the data will flow to the correct machine. There are plenty of cheap gateway/routers at BestBuy and CompUSA for between $30-$45.
