Default Network Topology

Hello,

I have a few questions on the best way I should configure my network architecture.
I have the following on the network that I want to take advantage of:
- Server with Gigabit NIC
- 2 NAS with Gigabit NICÂ’s

What I was thinking of doing, and it is just a thought cause IÂ’m not all sure if it would help anything.

Buying a 4-port gigabit switch and connecting the server and 2 NAS
Then connecting that switch to a 10/100 switch where the rest of the network resides.

I guess my question is, would it improve the network doing this? Is there a better way?

Also on a side note, I was thinking of doing this (as a complete model of my network)
Having a 8-Port 10/100 switch as the main brain
Have all the workstations (10 of them) and the printers hooked to a HUB that hooks to the brain switch. (This would be to organize all user activity and to shoot all activity through the HUB to the switch)
And lastly have the 4-Port gigabit switch connected to the server and the 2 NAS and have this 4-port gigabit switch connect directly to the brain.

I hope that made sense, looking forward to all and any feedback. Thanks!

SL

Sounds good to me, your gigabit switch will be the backbone that interconnect all switches. One thing I don't consider is having the printer on the hub I would rather have it on the "brain" switch therefore when the host need to print the information woundn't need to travel to the gigabit switch. Now as you know hub are really bad devices for connecting host that require alot of bandwidth time. Try to put host that do not require much bandwidth activities on the hub and put the rest on the switches.

One more I forgot to mention, it doesn't matter if you put the printer on the hub, the information will travel to the "brain switch" anyways since hub just broadcast out all port.
