Default Network connection drops

Hi there. I have a problem where my desktop computer looses connection to the router. It does this as far as I can tell, only when there is lots of traffic (torrenting, streaming football). After a few minutes of use of heavy traffic my network icon in the tray shows a little bubble with "network connection unplugged" or something along those lines. However I still have complete connectivity with my laptop, Wii, and other desktop.

I've tried a few things.
First I've tried just simply right clicking on it, and repairing it. That didn't work.
Second I tried uninstalling the drivers. However, whenever I tried to uninstall the drivers, the network connection window would stop responding.
The only thing I have found that works, rebooting in safe mode. Then doing absolutely nothing and restarting it again in regular mode.

Any advice to help me would rock!

ps, I have windows xp 2ed with all updates. My router is a Westell 327W. Any other info will be gladly given

You can try reinstalling the driver through safe-mode if it's giving you problem in normal mode. I don't suspect the problem is with the Ethernet cable or NIC because that would render your connection 100% useless. However you can try different things to test out the cable or NIC. Like using another Ethernet cable that is known to be good, and if your NIC is installed on the PCI slot you can remove it and insert it into another available PCI slot.

I have reinstalled the drivers in safe mode. It doesn't seem to help.
Also I just found out that my wireless card in the same computer is responding the same way. Won't let me even ping anything.

is it possible a trojan that is doing this. I seem to think that there is a possibility I have a trojan stuck on that mahine.

Unfortunately the problem could be the wireless card, the router, or a software issue.

If you think you may have a virus or a trojan, make sure your anti-virus is up to date and you have a good spyware scanner. Does the problem occur on any other machine on your network? If so, it's probably a router issue.

I had this same issue come up some time ago, and it turned out that my router was just showing its age. Eventually, I had to replace it.

The router is a Westell? I thought they made modems, not routers, maybe they do both I forget.

I would try what they said, try the NIC in a different slot. What kind of network frquency is it, A,B,G? Wired or wireless?

Well my Network card is built into my mobo. Also I have no problems with other computers on the network. Although I haven't tried any of those machines using as much bandwidth as this one. Maybe I will leave one of them up trying a torrent for the night, see if it drops out too.

My westel is a modem with a built in Router. It came with my DSL from Verizon.

Oh okay built-in...hmm. Well. I know on one of my machines, my ethernet slot died on my mobo brand new lol, so I bought a cheap dlink ethernet card for like 20 bucks to test it out and it worked fine. So perhaps it is your slot...sounds like it's PC specific.

That's going to be the best way to tell if it's a router or PC issue.
