i would also like to know what would i need to have a network up and running i know you have to have a router but do you have to have a card and if you does it have to be in both computers or just the one recieve from the one cpu with the cable modem

First get the router and NICs. You may already have Wired NICS in your machines. If you wish to go wireless, get : This and This

Wireless Routers are not as secure as wired routers but you shouldn't have to worry too much. Any AV or Firewall will help protect your machines.

Your machines should be able to network together. Once you have purchased your router. Start a new thread on setting it up.
Its not very hard and there are plenty of people here that will be able to show you step by step how to configure the machines.

Honestly it would depend on what you wish to research. This place is good to ask questions. There aren't too many subjects about computers that the locals here can't answer.

If you list a few subjects, I can help you find what you are looking for.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP will basicly work flawlessly together in a network. XP is basicly 2000.

Anyways for network knowledge, first look at reading Upgrading and Reparing network's 4th edition, and for PC knowledge read Upgrading and Reparing PC's 16th edition. Than read some Cisco sttuff, as cisco hold's 80% of the network (non home) market.
