| Need help! I can thank the iPod for this.... Hey all, just a quick question. I have 3 year old Windows XP PC. Just bought a new Windows XP PC. I have about 3100 songs on my old PC. I cant simply install iTunes on my new PC and plug in my iPod, because then it will "update" and my iPod will be wiped clean.
So, I have those 3200 songs in a folder on my old PC desktop. Is there a way I can transport this folder of songs fast and efficiently to my new PC? I dont know much about networking, my guess would maybe to set up a direct ethernet connection to the PCs? I dont know, but would really appreciate some advice. Thanks, |

| Ok thanks, I will try it. So I just plug one end of the crossover cable to one PC, and the other end to the other PC. And say the music folder is on the desktop. How would I actually "transfer" it over to the new PC? Do I copy the folder, and some how paste it onto the other PCs hard drive? |

| 1)Plug both computers NIC with the cross over cable.
On the old XP, go to control panel, network connection. Right click on the network card that is plug to the cross over cable and select Properties. Double click TCP/IP.
Select "Use the following IP address" and enter:
IP address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:None
DNS:None
Click Ok to save and exit
2) Do the same for the new XP computer but give it the following IP and Subnet:
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:None
DNS:None
Click Ok to save and exit
3) On the new XP computer, right click on "My Computer" select "Map Network Drives" enter the following in the folder section
\\192.168.1.1\c$
It will ask you to provide a user name, put in the user account of the old computer, the account must have administrative rights. You should now have access to the old computers C: drive. You can copy anything over to the new PC now.
4) After you're done, just set your TCP/IP settings back to default and disconnect from the mapped drive. The mapped drive should appear on your new computer in My Computer. |

What should I do? |

| You must be on XP Home...
Just type in the name of the share instead.
So instead of c$
Just type in the folder name of the share. If the share folder is call music or my music just replace c$ with the folder name.
example
\\192.168.1.1\music
\\192.168.1.1\my music |

| Hmm I did this too and got the same message. On my old PC, the "Music" folder is located on the deskptop. Do I need to move it somehwhere specific?
Also, when I got to map hardrive on the new pc, aside from asking me for the sever and folder, is asks for a drive, and lets me select letters like F, Z, D, etc. What should I select here? |

| It doesn't matter which drive you select, the driver letter will be available, windows will only let you select and view what drive letter is available.
You have to make sure the folder is shared first, so right click on the folder, select properties and select to share it in the sharing tab.
Then you can use the map drive. |

| you could also utilize the USB 2.0 on the ipod by enabling "disk mode."
Also, I believe if you turn off the automatic updating of the ipod from iTunes, it won't ask to 'update' your iPod. |
