I have a router with only one ethernet out and need to connect another computer to the internet(wired connection). Will a switch work, or will I have to buy a new router with more ethernet pots on the back of it.

Are you sure it's a SOHO router? What's the brand and model of the device? The main purpose and feature for sharing a broadband Internet is the NAT/PAT feature.
