| Got a problem that is plaguing my friends PC. We just built him a new computer and got everything up and running, but he cannot hit the internet. he's on a cable modem. His wifes PC can connect to the internet just fine, as well as see his shared folders on their network. I can connect him directly to the cable modem (bypassing router) and I can do an IP refresh/renew and pull down a good IP from Cox, I can even ping this new IP from my house, but he cannot connect to the internet or his POP server. I've tried reloading NIC drivers as well as trying two different NICs. I've reloaded TCP/IP as well as the MS client, but to no avail. Can anyone help ? |

| Super Techie | check with your network property, how many TCP/IP protocols are there? if more than one, delete them with only the one for ethernet card left. I don't think your router can handle more than one IP address? It must have NAT running to support multiple internal address and translate them to that "good COX address"

| Hmm, well I do have two nics installed currently, one being built into the MB, thus giving me the two TCP/IP protocols, but even before that I wasn't able to connect, and I'm not currently running through a router. I took the router off thinking that would help, but it doesn't seem to matter. I'm convinced it has something to do with a setting somewhere or soemthing isn't loaded correctly. |

| Super Techie | I"m kinda confused. Ok, now if you connect the new computer directly to the modem, it will get ip address but it won't open any webpage. right? here's the ip address of yahoo, 66.218.71.198 you ping it first, if it works, type it into your browser. if you can open the webpage, then you need to fix DNS configuration. if not working tell me.

| it sounds to me like the router is your problem. can you try going into the win98 machine and go to [control panel> network connections] and rightclicking on the network connection being used to connect to the netowrk/ internet? it should be called 'local area connection' or something like this. once you get properties click 'disable' and then click 'enable'. try to see if you can open a webpage. if not, you should manually unplug the netowrk cables from router and reset the router by pushing and holding down reset button for 30 seconds. reattach cables and try webpage again. |
