| IDENTITY THEFT and NETWORKING question my computer was recently hacked and $2100 was taken from my account, of which i only had 1k, I cant do anything about it until monday. but i know the punk used a key logger virus or something like that. i am wondering can he access another computer on my network since my cpu is linked via router to my grandfathers computer?
p.s. other than replacing my hard drive, is there any way i can prevent this from happening? i had both spybot S&D and AVG installed and still got hit? any feedback would be greatly appreciated |

Yes, if the other systems are on the same network and they are not firewalled |

| Re: IDENTITY THEFT and NETWORKING question Can you further describe the network you are on? Is it a wireless network, or wired?
Does the person that allegedly 'hacked' your computer have PHYSICAL access to the computer, as in to sit down and use it?
Just out of curiousity, how did you establish that it was this person that was able to access your account and get your money?? Was this transfered from a bank account? |

| Re: IDENTITY THEFT and NETWORKING question Unfortunately, i just found out today that my version of windows is not valid so dl all their security updates is not possible. as far as other security measures no, not that i know of. the network itself is wired through linksys router. my grandfather just informed me his cpu is shot also and wont even come on anymore, but i have disconnected it regardless.
and not to come off sounding arrogant but there is nothing "alleged" about this, i may not be a technical expert, but i am no child either. No one has access to my computer but myself. whoever did this used my paypal account information to transfer the funds. my bank cant tell me the exact destination as of yet, and that i would have to wait till monday to file a report.
i am sure this was through some sort of virus or BHO, spybot shows both a win32.keylogger.fl and a smitfraud-C.toolbar888, of which i have no knowledge of dl'ing.
i appreciate the help, i truly do, but i just dont know what to do now. heck i cant even pay to authenticate my version of windows. |

| Re: IDENTITY THEFT and NETWORKING question Well, if Spybot found the keylogger, there is no doubt that it is there, but have you ever logged into your Paypal account through a PUBLIC computer, such as at a school or a library or an internet cafe? Perhaps a wireless computer, or a friends computer? Have you ever clicked an email link to log into Paypal?
Considering it was an issue over the internet, it is hard to say if it was that keylogger that did it, but it is likely. If you are runing a pirated version of Windows, it could be that it may have been BUNDLED with the OS upon installation, which I wouldn't doubt.
Sorry about the Alleged part, I mis-read your original post, where it said "but i know the punk", and that is how I was wondering about the physical access to the machine, wasn't questioning wether or not the theft took place.
Anyways, if you haven't already done so, File a transaction dispute with Paypal ASAP...... https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/websc...fileWhat=claim |

| Re: IDENTITY THEFT and NETWORKING question thanks for the advice, as far as paypal, i used it about a month ago to purchase a pendant, and other than that i am rather careful about how i access it. I went there (the site) an hour ago and my account is now limited access only, they suspect a third party accessed it, and have put a hold on my account. the bank said i have to wait until monday will that interfere with paypal's claim? |

| Re: IDENTITY THEFT and NETWORKING question If paypal has an 800 number for support, you might want to call them to see if they can still file a claim on your account, just incase your bank needs that...
I had somone steal about $1,400 from my checking account in New Orleans when I was out of town in South Carolina, and everything thing was clearing in the same few days.... I didn't find out until I got home, and filed a Police Report right away (you might want to do that also), and the bank re-funded my money within about 2 days... |
