Default Home network

Hey guys, Ive been having trouble with getting on the network between my two computers.
I was wondering if any of you can tell me how to set up a network between a Windows ME desktop computer and a Windows XP laptop computer. I have tried several times but I cant seem to locate the other computer from either computers on the network. They arent wirelessly connected, I have the two computers connected by a small ethernet cable.
Maybe some of you can help me with this (most likely) small problem.
Thanx!

This cable is a small crossover cable, right? You can't just use a regular ethernet cable to connect two computers (unless there's a hub or switch in there you forgot to mention). The transmit and receive lines need to be reversed (shades of the old null modem cable days), which is what a crossover cable does.
