Default home connection

i am trying to set up a home network through a hub. i go through the wizard on both computers and setup a workgroup. firewall is off. i choose the option to set up a network without an internet connection. when the computers connect to eachother there comes up a message saying that "limited or no connectivity". i cant actually see any files or anything from the other computer and i am very confused cos i dont know what im doing wrong.

How are the computers connected? Do you have your internet connection connected to the hub?

If you are not connecting this hub to the internet, then you have to manually configure the IP addresses on each computer. When a computer says that it has "limited or no connectivity" is means that it isnt able to get an IP address from somewhere. Hubs dont give out IP addresses, so you have to configure them manually.

The default windows IP adressing scheme will also work in situations like this.

That is true. Be sure they are however not pulling the same IP address. I am not sure if APIPA is smart enough to know to assign differnt IP's. In all cases I would reccomend you simply assign PC1 to IP=192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0 Default Gateway=Empty

PC2 to IP=192.168.1.3 Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0 Default Gateway=Empty

This is assuming that no internet connection is involved on either machine and there are no other network devices involved. If there is we would have to configure DNS and Default Gateway.

Windows will assign each PC a random IP, than check for an IP conflict. If their is a conflict, it will choose another random IP.

i did like win2k patcher suggested and it resolved the problem with the limmited or no conectivity.

however now when i go into my network places each computer can see the workgroup but only itself. it cant see the other one.
