Default Ethernet network and dial-up internet

I have a pc and laptop and decided to try an ethernet network. Now please tell me if I'm wrong. In order to setup the network, I need a NIC card in each computer and an ethernet crossover cable right? And I just connect the crossover cable to each NIC and run Network Setup Wizard? This will allow me to share the net with both computers? Thanks a lot.
