Default e-mail relaying

Until recently I have been sending e-mail through my ISP's SMTP servers. They host one of my domains.

I hope soon to be switching to another ISP, but they don't plan on offering e-mail service. In preparation for this, I have tried using the SMTP server associated with one of my other domains, which is hosted elsewhere. In doing so, I have started getting problems with messages being rejected by the recipients server because of relaying. The odd thing is that it is inconsistent; if I keep trying to send, it eventually gets through.

So, I have two questions. Is there any way around the whole relaying problem? Why do repeated attempts eventually get accepted?

Thanks
Derek
