Default Distance from wireless router a problem

My wireless router is in my room, and I typically use my laptop which is about 10 feet or so from the router. I can never get wireless signal. Now, my friend came over with his laptop and sat closer to the router and could not connect. I took his laptop and was unblae to connect him either. Then we went out front, and he connected immediately (I didnt check my laptop) Does having my laptop too close to the router have something to do with the connectivity. His R/C planes, for example, when he puts his radio next to his reciever his servos go insane. Does the same go with wi fi? This is what I'm led to believe.

You should be able to connect at 10 feet. Are there any other sources of EM radiation (TVs/CRTs, Wireless phones, Microwaves, speakers, etc...) in the room where you can't connect? Do you have line of site to the device when in the room?

I hjave a monitor on either side of the router, but I wouldnt think that a CRT would serve any interference. I have a satellite speaker a few feet from the router, but it is small. And they are good speakers, so they are sheilded well. I have a perfect line of site to it, I am directly in front of it. There really is nothing else that would serve interference. My parents computers (in a office detached from the house) almost always connect. Them not connecting isnt pertinent to this question.

It dosent make sense to me. Like I said, I can connect when I am a distance from the router.

It's internal. Would possibly moving my router into another room solve the problem? That would make sense.
