Default dialup speed

Isn't dialup speed supposed to be 56kb/s? Why is it that mine shows only 45.2kb/s? Is there software that can correct this?

45.2 is great for dial-up. Very few people get a full 56k. I got friggin 9.6kbps when i was on dial-up. Its your phone lines causing the problem.

What if broadband is not available in his area? If people are still on dial-up in this day and age, there is a reason. When I was stuck on dial-up, nothing bothered me more than for people to spout out things like that.

I'm planning to. But broadband has that same problem. My cousins have it and even though it's supposed to give them 1.5MB worth of bandwidth, it the connection icon usually only shows like 500kb of bandwidth.

I agree with you beedubaya, I am one of those people.

I live way out in the mountains were there is no cable or
high speed land lines like dsl.

The only tv or high speed internet is satellite. For tv, DTV
is fine but Im not sold on spending the money for high
speed satellite internet but I frequently hear how behind
the times I am.

For now I remain %$#@ happy with my 28.8 connection
and my isp blaming every problem on the phone lines, or
my system and NEVER anything at their end.......

BTW Katsumoto, I would reread the plan, I bet it says UP TO
so I would ask what they have as a guaranteed MINIMUM.

If they cant guarantee a minimum that is greater than the
MAXIMUM of the plan below I would go with the lower plan
and save the few extra dollars.

Whatever you do, DON'T go with Direcway Satellite. I am so glad I waited for cable instead of getting that overpriced fraud. You pay $600 for installation and then $60 per month, only for 384Kbps down and 45kbps up. Even worse, they have this little thing called the Fair Access Policy (FAP) where they cap your downloads at 169MB per day. Just an hour or so of surfing bandwidth intensive websites with flash and streaming, and you will be finished for the day. Even Direcway themselves say that their service should be for light websufing, email, and a few downloads.

Well, I wish I could wait long enough to get cable were Im at
but it will NEVER happen-too much distance and 100's of
millions of dollars to put land lines down.

The average distance between switches for most city communities
is about 2 miles but for us in the mountains it is better than 20
miles. The county barely takes care of our above ground phone or power lines and they will never invest in the addition of cable.

As to your point Beedubaya about Direcway, that is precisely why
I am not moving towards satellite internet-what a crock of crap.
Not only is the service subpar, it is overpriced. I was somewhat
excited at first about the option of satellite internet until I read the
fine print!!!!!!!!!!

DSL lite is decent for the handful of users who are concerned about price but can't deal with dial up any more. Of course, location is still an issue for some of you...
