| DHCP Relay Agents ok, i am doing a project where there are 3 subnets, and the clients are all running DHCP with DNS and WINS.
there is a minimum of 28 clients on each subnet, and i am going to round it out to around 30.
if i set up a master DHCP server wtih a backup database on subnet one, can i through a relay agent on router 1 and 2 so i can send out DHCP broadcasts to subnets 1, 2, and 3?
and if anyone else can help with the configuration of these three services together, i would greatly appreciate it.
Ches Have a Great Day

| I really don't think that this is possible. But, maybe someone will have another idea. The whole purpose of a DHCP server is to assign IP within it's range. If you have 3 different subnets then I don't think that the DHCP server on subnet can communicate through the other routers. Unless the router was confiured to allow the DHCP server to communicate....but even so...I don't think that the DHCP server would be able to assign an IP address out of it's range.

| Is this a physical or logical project?

| it is a logical project, and yes a DHCP server CAN assign IP info past a router, if the router is BOOTP enabled. if not you will have to set up a seperate win2k server with a relay agen t on it to throw the info across the subnet.
but i found out today, that i am going to need to amke three different scopes and put them togehter into a superscope.

| Are you using the router as a DHCP? Which model router stack are you using? If you are using a router with this capability within your model then why have a seperate server?

| this project is completly on paper, no acual brands, all in theory. But i need another server because the routers are NOT BOOTP compliant, therefore they can not use a DHCP relay agent
