| Dedicated Server Thinking about turning a computer into a dedicated server. I have Comcast broadband as well as Windows 2003 Server Edition. Best place to register domain? Software needed? I am mostly a programmer really don't know too much about the whole setup. I basically need to know how. Any advice would be welcomed.

| I'm not sure of the program name, and my post won't help you much. However, I remember I have a program on my desktop (not operational right now) that will let you set up a domain on your PC, I'm about 99% sure.

| Is this a webserver? Use Apache as the webserver software, Slackware as the OS, and try www.dyndns.org. |

| What do you need the server to do? Webhosting, gaming?
For webhosting, there's a nice tut on these forums http://www.tech-forums.net/showthrea...threadid=37721
Give the old search a try if it's something different.

You know, it's people like you and I, and many others here, who mostly give advice/answers, and not ask a million dumb questions with exploring without our minds at first.
BTW, this isn't meant to prosecute anyone, I'm just trying to make a point. Not many people here use google before posting, nor does anyone search the site. The site comes (FREE, everything's FREE) with an easy-to-use search engine, but no one uses it. I wish more people would.

| Windows 2003 server as the name suggests is server software. Once installed you can set up various services, such as the IIS webserver, ftp server etc... Most of what you want is probably there, it is just a case of setting it up - which is relatively straightforward.
In terms of getting a domain do you have a static IP address? If not get one, then google for domain names and register whatever you want - for a fee of course.
Until you get a domain you can always connect just using your IP address.
Make sure yo open the correct ports on your firewall, and you are away. |

| I have checked with my ISP and they said that I would have to upgrade (around $100 a month) to get a static IP. I believe my IP only changes when I reset my modem, which is really never. Is there any other way to get a static IP besides from your ISP? Thank.

| Use www.dyndns.org and that will solve the IP problem, but it should never change if you leave your router or modem on anyway. |

But at the end of the day it all depends on your ISP |

| So I register with no-ip.com and created a free domain. I set up my IIS on the Server 2k3 to the same specs. I tried to access the web from another computer and nothing. I went to www.canyouseeme.org and tried typing in a whole bunch of various ports just to see if maybe it was my selection. None of them worked; they all say connection timed out. My internet setup is such, I have the cable coming in connected to a modem, hooked up to a linksys-g router broadcasting wireless. For now the router is wireless to my server. I cannot for the life of my figure out how to set the router or computer up so that it can access all of the ports. Anyone?
