Default Connection problem

i use 'Netcabo' (cable) as my internet provider. the problem is that wether i use a crossover or a straight rj45 to connect the modem to my pc, it works fine (my nic is Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Adapter that came with the mobo Asus P4P800-E Deluxe), but when i connect the modem to my old pc(server) i cant access the internet (although both the modem and the card LED blinks, showing network activity).

can it be the modem?? cause, it isnt supposed to work wit both the cross-over and the straight, right??

thanx :cyclopes:

if the modem works on one pc and not the other its prolly not the modem. I'd say review your server config then start swapping hardware in the server starting with the nic

Hard to guess without knowing the cable modem brand/model and the NIC brand on the older PC. Here's a few questions of the sort that come to my mind. Does the cable modem's ethernet port work at only 10 Mbps or only 100 Mbps or both 10 & 100? If the cable modem on works at 10 Mbps, does the older PC's NIC step down to 10 Mbps and is it autosensing? Almost all NICs are today, but there was a time you had to use a utility or a jumper to set the network connection speed. I'm sure that your Asus' onboard NIC will autosense.

That whole cable-modem-locking-onto-one-mac address thing is something I was unaware of until recently. My DSL modem does nothing of the sort. (It connects to a Linux firewall box anyway, so maybe it does, but I've never noticed. My "inside" machines connect via a switch to the firewall.) Those with cable modems seem to have to switch them off whenever they make a change in computers or routers. Someone said they have to leave theirs off for hours so that the change gets noticed.

By "leave it on" you mean "leave it off, right?
