Default Connecting Belkin WAP to Netgear DG834G

Hi All,

I am trying to connect a wireless access point into the back of my PC (Belkin F5D7130) and have it hook in to my DG834G Wireless router.

The purpose of this is to avoid using a wireless network card as I want to be able to do Linux FTP installs from time to time. SO as far as Linux will be concerned it will be connected directly to a web connection via ethernet.

I am not very good at networking and my work colleagues who advised me to buy this WAP and gave the illusion of knowing all about networks seem to know very little

Anyway I can connect to the WAP's UI no problem thorugh ethernet and I can put the MAC address of the DG834g into it also but it does not connect. If I try pinging from the DG834g it times out so it would seem neither device can see each other.

I am about to send the WAP back and am wondering if anyone can give any advice on this please.

typically wireless routers come with lan ethernet ports. you should be able to connect a cable from a nic in your machine to a port on the router.

It's better to use a wireless ethernet bridge rather than an access point if you want to connect via an ordinary ethernet port to a wireless network. This might be better to solve your problem:

I'm not sure that a wireless access point can be used instead, so maybe it is a good idea to send it back.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Connecting a cable straight to the router is not an option as the PC is upstairs in my house and the router is downstairs.

I have since been on to Belkin and what I am trying to do will work if I have a belkin Router or if I get a second Belkin WAP.

I will send it back and probably get this as I think it will do what I want though will check with netgear first but it was what I was going to buy in the first place

Just buy a roll of cable and have fun fishing it through the walls
