I have a Laptop and a Desktop and i want to have both of them online at the same time.

i just bought a router and i can go online with either of computer as long as the other one isnt plugged in.

When their both pluged in the computers cant get and ip address or something like that.. (a yellow ! comes on my taskbar, when i click it it goes away then comes back)

PS: i use sbc yahoo dsl with a dynamic ip adress

Is it an IP address conflict? If so are you using a DSL router with DHCP enabled? Are both computers configured to obtain an IP address automatically? If so when they are both plugged in renew the IP on the one that cant get online and see what happens.

another note: neither computer can go online when two or more a re plugged in.

i think i need to set the ip addreses manually but i dont know if this will work with the dynamic dsl.

also im using a linksys nh1005 Version 2.0 if that helps

oh,i think you should have a switch to do it.
you can set your static ip address and also you can refresh your dhcp at your Laptop.

The linksys device that you are using is just a hub. Did someone recommend this to you? Please list the make and model of the DSL modem that you are using so that one of us can look up the model and see if it has any routing functionality. If your DSL modem doesn't have any routing functionality within it then you are only going to be able to get one IP address assigned. You will need another type of Linksys device attached between the modem and the computers. A simple wired router thats able to get you going will only be about $40 or so. Depending on where you go to get it.

Plug the modem into one of the computers.
Then, from the computer that is plugged into the modem, make sure you can get on the internet. Once you confirmed that you are on the internet, click start > run and then type "cmd' without the quotes and hit enter. at the prompt it gives you type "ipconfig /all" again without quotes. Can you list the results it gives you on here? Just from the IP Address to the DNS Server address...thats all we need.

The linksys device that you have more or less acts as a middle man and just passes information along. It doesn't know where it came from nor which computer was originally intended to receive the information. Your modem only has one live IP address to pass along to a computer. This is why you cannot connect using more than one.

A home gateway/router will act a little differently because it will take that live IP address from the modem and use it. It then, essentially, makes up "fake" IP addresses to distribute to multiple computers that you have connected to it.

I hope this makes a little sense to ya. I'm not too good with explaining things sometimes.
