| Okay so heres the problem. I went to my friends house to check out his computer network because he said his cable internet was slow. So I decided to lock out any attempts of outside intruders by employing some security like changing the router password and setting up WEP and changing the default SSID, but when I have these security settings in place his other computer that connects wirelessly cannot seem to obtain and IP address. It just keeps getting an autoconfiguration address that start something like 169... Its a linksys BEFSRW router and he also has an XBOX that connects to the router wirelessly. I uprgraded the routers firmware and I would turn off all computers and XBOX and unplug the router and cable modem for 5 minutes then turn them back on but all my attempts have failed at getting his computer to obtain and ip address. The living room computer is hardwired and his computer and the XBOX are both wireless. When I turn the security settings off and put things back to default his computer is able to obtain and IP address. Do any of you know why I can't get these security settings to work? His computer is running WinXP. |

| I'm assuming you entered the encryption code when you connected. It may just be a case of the encryption degrading your signal. Try moving the computer closer to the router.
