My computer will connect to the internet and will go to any website that is .edu. But it will not go to any other websites. Sometimes it will start to load the other sites but then an error messase will pop up. The message says, internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Does anybody have an idea on how to fix this?

Install a new browser.

Opera or Firefox, your choice.

Firefox:
-Lots of Extensions
-Huge Userbase
-FOSS

Opera:
-Fastest Web Browser in majority of tests
-W3C Compliant
-Relatively Light

Type nslookup in command prompt (cmd.exe) and try to resolve the domain name. If can resolve, then some device is blocking the access, you might need to check the router/browser to see any web filtering configuration.

Can also try other web browsers ...

also from what i heard Apple safari>Opera but i dont like safari becaause it is in beta and it sux

And on mac, that is true...but on windows, Opera is still the fastest. On linux I believe Konqueror is the fastest, though there are so many of them I'm not sure.
