Can you describe what you are trying to do for us?
Are you
1. Trying to connect to the switch to CONFIGURE it?
2. Trying to connect the computer to the switch to add it to a network?

If 1, then first, make sure you have the console cable attached to the SERIAL port on the computer, and the other end plugged into the CONSOLE port on the switch. NEXT, open Hyperterminal (START > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Hyper Terminal. Once you open Hyperterm, the settings should be:

Bits per second: 9600
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: None

After you enter that info, hit ok, and you should be good to go. Press ENTER key, and you should have the "Switch>" prompt (unless there is a previous configuration existing on the switch.)

If you were just looking to connect the PC to the switch, connect it with a straight-through cable from the NIC on the computer, to one of the Ethernet (or FastEthernet) ports on the switch.

For basics on configuring Cisco Switches & routers, I would suggest that you get yourself a Cisco CCNA book to read, as it will familiarize you with the commands for configuration.

With switches, there isn't alot of configuration you will have to be doing. Based on the fact that you don't seem to be very familiar with them, I would guess that you aren't looking to set up a complex network with multiple VLAN's and inter-VLAN routing....

We could also try to help you here with any questions you would have.
