I've tried doing the net send in CMD prompt many times on networks, but i have never ever gotten it to actually work. Has anyone done this?

net send computerName "message"

with computerName replaced by the computers name or IP address should do it.

If it doesnt work then you need to enable it. go to adminastrative tools and services. i think it is Server (but i may be wrong). Set its start type to automatic so it runs on startup and start it.

then it should work. obviously whoever you are sending the message to will also have to have it running, and you will probably have to watch out for firewalls too.

nope, it doesn't appear to make any difference whether it is in quotes or not

i dont remember because i dont have my network set up right now, but it just came back Could not be send or IP not found

the service you need to have on is the messenger service, it must be on both pcs. sp2 may turn this off by default to fight the spam that was being sent a few months back.

ah- ok that must be it! i forgot- but i think i disabled that on my computer a while back, AND both computers i was testing it on had SP2! thanks- i just thought it was a fake thing or something that doesnt work
