Question Cant download at full speed?

ok, heres the deal. i just got my 98SE rig up(using it now) and its good and all, cleaned mobo, organized wires and whatnot, and got another, faster pc out of my closet for my xp install. so these 2 computers are exactly the same, but one has a 333mhz(98SE) cpu, and one has a 400mhz(xp) cpu, same vid, same sound, 128mb ram, clones. so, earlier, when it had xp on it, it downloaded at around 90~100 kb/s(dsl) and on the new rig(400) it downloads at 100, but on this, even when its the only pc up and runnin, downloads only at 40~50. so i installed firefox, and still, even in firefox with it fully optimized in about:config, same problem. what gives? is this just a problem with 98SE where you cant donwload faster than 50kb/s? its kinda annoying, cause this is gonna be set up as a file hosting system. ideas?

k i did all i could at that site. well, heres just an idea of whats going on. on both machines side by side, i did a sample file from microsoft, which i know is fast(halo trial) and on xp machine, 90~95 kb/s, on the 98 yet still, now slower, 35~40kb/s any other ideas?

EDIT: oops, almost forgot, i got a 100mb router and a 100mb card, cat5 cable, and its an 864/160 kbits/sec connection.

I could give you some idea but it may not help.

Check the network cable, make sure it's not bend, cut or damage and make sure it's not over 100m (I doubt it's over that length)

Switch the network card.

Use another switch port on the router

Run a spyware scan/check

Run a packet analyzer (ethereal) on the slow machine to capture and analyze the connection when the computer is idling.

Check for/configure any firewall/Anti-virus application running.

Run Linux for servers, not 98.

DSL damnsmalllinux.org and slackware would be your best bet for a lightweight distro on a low end machine.

Or (this is a qoute from jakec)
