1. do an orderly shut down of your pc
2. turn off your wireless router
3. turn off your broadband modem
then
4. turn on the modem, wait a few
5.turn on the router, wait a few minutes
6. turn on your pc
If the pc still does not connect, click start, then run, then type cmd and hit enter. type ipconfig then enter, what ip are you getting ?
for a test have you tried a cat5 cable ?

Can you get on if you bypass the router and connect directly to the cable/DSL modem?

Something isn't right..... you did an IPCONFIG, and you are getting an IP address on the PC of 192.168.0.1??? This should be the Routers IP address.... Do the IPConfig again, and list the follwoing....

IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Default Gateway:

Tipically, the router will be 192.168.x.1, and will have a DHCP pool starting around 192.168.x.100.... that is the TIPICAL router factory default....

hi, i cant bypass the router, beacuse its a router modem, cos its a modem with the router built in.

i did ipconfig again, and it gives me exactly the same results, and its just black after the default gateway, and the connection specific dns suffix.

also, this is on a really recently built pc, with xp just installed, if thats relevant, and ive never been able to use wirless on it before, just the cable?

thanks

Please describe futher this modem/gateway. Is it a MULTIPORT gateway? (Does it have more than 1 RJ-45 port on it for computers to be connected via wire? Go into the Network connections menu, and look at the properties of the wireless connection. When you open the properties box, you will see a scroll box there with a list of different protocols installed..... scroll through them (there should will likely be less than 10, closer to 5 or thereabouts), and click on INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP), and then click the properties button. You will now have a NEW window pop up. Make sure you are looking at the GENERAL tab, and the first thing there under some text is radio buttons for OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY, or USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS. Please check this, and tell us which one of these is selected. It SHOULD be the Obtain IP Address Automatically. If THIS doesn't work, read on.....

It doesn't matter if it is a modem/router combo or not, if the Device is doing NAT, the default gateway and the computer IP addresses will be different. Since you are not getting a default gateway, I am suspecting that your wireless config is set with a static IP address of 192.168.0.1, and the default gateway field isn't populated.

Do this. Connect the comptuer via WIRE to the router. When you are able to surf the internet, then do an IPCONFIG again. PLEASE, write that info down, (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway) and post it here. Even if it is the SAME INFO you already posted, type it out again, in a new post. While connceted via the wire, log into the router's config page, and verify all the wireless settings there. (I am going off of this being a modem with wireless router.... if it isn't and you are using a wireless AP, pleae give us that info).

Please try to be complete as possible, and give us detailed information. if you get this far, and it STILL isn't working, answer these questions....

*When you search for wireless networks, how many of them come up in the list?
*Are you POSITIVE that you are connecting to the correct network?
*Can you get to the router's config page through the wireless?
*Can you PING the router?

Default Re: cant connect to the internet

right, ive the above, i changed it so it did the automatic ip address, and now it says limited or no connection, also i plugged the rj45 in and in ipconfig i get this:
ipconfig: 192.168.1.64
default mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.169.1.254

also wen on the router config page and i got this info on the wirless:
Status: Inactive
Type: Generic Device
Connected To: WLAN (Wireless)
Allowed on WLAN: Yes
Physical Address: 00:11:f5:14:dc:00
IP Address Assignment: DHCP
IP Address: 192.168.1.65
Always use the same address: No
DHCP Lease Time: 0 days, 23:26:41

dont know if that means anything. i cant get to the router page on the wirless, there is the one wirless connection in the network connection folder, i cant connect to any other network, and how do i ping the router?

thanks

2 things.... First, can you VERIFY that there we no typo's in the numbers you listed here? Second, when you were seeing these numbers, was the internet WORKIN? Reason I ask if that the Host IP address 192.168.1.64 and the default gateway 192.168.1.254, each with a 255.255.255.0 are in Different sub-nets, and there is no way that they would be communicating....... (unless you have it configured that way, and the router is routing between the 2 networks, but I don't think that is the case here...)

To PING, you would open a command prompt... START > RUN > type 'CMD' hit enter. Then you will type 'PING<space><IP Address>'. An example would be 'PING 192.169.1.254'.

ok, yes those numbers are right, and i got them when i disabled the wirless and plugged in the rj45, and the internet was working with the cable. with out the cable, now that i ive changed it so it does automatic ip address, in cmd when i type ipconfig it comes up with nothing, so i cant ping it, i pinged it fine with the rj45, but the internet was working anyways. but i used those numbers i got with the cable and put them in the internet protocol properties and changed it back to use the following ip, and it pinged ok, it said 4 packets sent 4 recieved, but i still couldnt connect.

any ideas?
