I shut down my computer today for about an hour, and after powering it back on, I am unable to connect to the internet through anything besides Internet Explorer. Mozilla Firefox, and programs like Ventrilo, or any games that I play that are online proclaim that I am not connected to the internet. I also noticed that the programs by the clock on my taskbar like volume and the others are not appearing when I restart, and I can not see them in the task manager either. If there is something that can be fixed, i extremely appreciate it, I've tried restarting my router and resetting it, but it appears that did not fix the problem.

You could try re-installing the os. Or, better yet, switch to Linux!! try Ubuntu

is ubuntu easy to deal with though, like having to find a linux version for every download

weeell, i suppose if you've had no experience with linux, its probably better to stick with xp. just reinstall windows xp. and you might try checking the internet settings for mozilla firefox. And check your firewall isnt blocking something it shouldn't be.

Have you done any virus scan's, adware scans, etc... ?

Also, are you POSITIVE that IE is ACTUALLY CONNECTED, and not just bringing up pages that may be in the cache? Try clearing the cache, and visit a site you haven't been to in a while, or ever.

IE does work, i am posting from the computer that has the problem. I asked one of my teachers today and they said my hard drive could be going bad. I dont know what that has to do at all with my internet connection to other programs but i disabled windows firewall too, and i still cant connect to anything besides IE. None of my processes i have set to run when i restart also come up either, i dont know why that isnt happening, i believe i stated that in my first post if that helps anything.

I would also suggest updating windows and reinstalling your LAN Driver.

I'd verify that your proxy settings in IE are clear, uninstall and reinstall your NIC drivers.

Also verify that there are no network briges in your network connections. I've seen them cause similar problems to this.

I'm fairly sure that reinstalling the NIC drivers will do the job though.

its a firewall issue, just add firefox and ur games to the trusted apps option, i had the same issue with Comodo Firewall when attempting to play Halo CE, Halo PC and Halo Trial and Mozilla Firefox and Ventrilo
