How many subnets are currently being used in the domain? Which one houses the WINS Server?
Is your development server on a different subnet?

Patience, this will get taken care of soon

Oh, something else, are you running any policies on the server (poledit?) If so, check to see if you have the "hide network" option enabled.

Thanks for your persistence and patience, HoLoCroN. There are 2 subnets in the domain and 2 WINS server addresses - 1 for each subnet. My SQL server is 198.168.10.242 and the WINS server is 198.168.10.225.

With the exception of the Registry.POL file that comes standard in an installation, there are no .POL files on the server and I haven't setup any policies that I'm aware of.

SMS: Administrator Console and SMS Services Cannot Connect to SQL Server
View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q291339
SYMPTOMS
In Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 sites in which both the site server and the server that is running Microsoft SQL Server are located on the same computer, the SMS Administrator console and the SMS services and threads may not connect to the SQL database under certain conditions.

The following entry may be logged in the Smsprov.log file:

E:\OPALSP2\Sdk_provider\Nt\Smsprov\SspObjectQuery. cpp(4233) : SQL Connection attempt timed out
SQL Error: Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist. General network error. Check your documentation.
The following entry may be logged in an SMS Executive service thread such as Hman.log:

~Cannot connect to the site source on the database, sleep 10 minutes..
Other programs may not have SQL connectivity issues. For example, you may be able to successfully connect with and run queries from the SQL Server Query Analyzer, even from the SMS database. You may not notice any errors or warnings in the SQL error log files.

1. Start the ODBC Data Source Administrator tool from Control Panel.
2. Click the System DSN tab, and then double click LocalServer.
3. Click Next.
4. Click Client Configuration.
5. Click Named Pipes in the Network Libraries section.
6. Click OK.
7. Make sure that With Windows NT authentication using the network login ID is selected.
8. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Heh, gues I could of just posted the link... oh well, already cut n'pasted.

I'm not sure if there an SMS server in the network (it wasn't posted anyway) but the ODBC administrator would basically apply to the DB's running on the system (SMS Runs on SQL). I think this issue isn't as complicated to figure out.. its something simple because there is connectivity... Hmm........Brainwave overload.... :wooha:

Do you have the other WINS server setup as the secondary WINS server on your box?

HoLoCroN - Thanks again!

Turns out this was a wierd little registry setting issue. Had to change a 0 to a 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlS et\Control\Lsa
Changed restrictanonymous DWORD value to a 1 and that did it.

Wow, I would have never thought of that. I'm curious, how did you come to this solution and why would changing the value from a 0 to a 1 would solve your problem?

Ahhhh, that is the registry key that poledit changes when you enable the "hide network" option. I'm glad you found it, its not an easy find.

Good Job!
