| I Helped my friend reinstalled his windows today, and after that the cable internet is not working anymore. The cable modem is set up in a way that any computer connects to it by Ethernet will work. I tried 3 laptops and everyone that connects to it was able to go online. One of the laptop was just reformatted using its recovery partition and it was able to connect to the internet right away. The os installed was XP pro and when i goto the network connections, the one that is named 19 or 1 something, anyway it is 4 digit. and was connected but internet still does not work. The xp pro was purchased many years ago, is there something that i need to do in order to get the internet working again? Help needed fast. Thanks |

| So the Local Area Connection in Network Connection shows that it's connected? First it's important that after even format you correctly installed your network card. Open up the command prompt and do a ping 127.0.0.1 to see if you can get a response back. |

| so your connecting through it with a router? try pinging 192.168.1.1 and see if you could get a response from that.

| Super Techie | 1394 is firewire and doesn't matter right now. If you don't see an icon in network connections for "local area connection", then you're probably missing the drivers for your ethernet adapter on the motherboard. Look for the driver for your mobo's ethernet adapter and that will probably fix this issue for you. Of course you'll have to get it on the internet from somewhere else and put it on a jump drive or something along those lines. Also- to double-check if it is actually missing the driver, go to device manager under system properties in the hardware tab at the top. Scroll down and look for yellow circled question (?) mark signs. If they are there saying no ethernet controller, or no audio controller or video controller. That means you're missing those specific drivers and you need to find them if you want to use them again. It is normal during a reformat to sometimes/sometimes not lose drivers and have to reinstall them, and since I reformat mine so often is why I always backup my drivers and have them handy for reinstall. I would suggest that to you as well. Good luck!
