| Ok, i've gotten interested in servers. I wanted to know since on newegg the specifics and details confuse me. Is there anyone that can explain to me what kind of interface i would have to use in order to properly use one and what exactly am i looking for when purchasing one. What i was thinking of using it for was for hosting my own webstie and some general experimentation with file sharing between myself and a friends across country. perhaps hosting games via the server from my cable connection. |

| A server is basically a much more powerful computer, usually more memory, processing power and storage space. Of course an array of different backup software for fault tolerance and a fast dedicated Internet line. You can turn any PC into a server depending on what you want to do with it. Web hosting requires a good amount of hard drive space and a fast Internet line, so does file sharing. Theres a lot of server OS out in the market but of course you can use Linux if you know how to configure stuff in it, some OS like Windows XP can give you server ability if you install third-party software. So basically what Im saying is the different between a workstation OS and a server OS is the feature, server OS are already bundle with them while the workstation OS can still perform server functionality using other software. Ill get back to later when Im out of work, maybe someone here can explain more to you. |
