Default Built-in Cat5 w/ new router & DSL setup

I have a small office which has cat5 built in already. We could transfer data fine between PCs but used seperate dialup on each. Now we get DSL. I didnt know how to get it shared between boths PCs so i bought a 4 port router thinking I could hookup the DSL to it and then 1 direct Cat5 line to 1 pc, and then run a cat5 from the routher through the built-in CAT5 (between walls) and then from the Ethernet wall jack to the 2nd pc.

For some reason that doesnt work. The light doesnt even turn on to show a connection to the 2nd pc. It has to do with the built-in CAT5, but I dnt know what the problem is.

Any one got any suggestions, I really gotta get this workin. THanks.

you had 2 PC connecting through one CAT5 cable without any HUB or switch?

well i am not 100% sure. There could have been a built in hub or switch. There ARE several(like 5) ethernet ports thorughout the office.

I didnt know if i could hookup the DSL cable right to one of the ports and get the otha pcs to share that connection. I doubt it though.

if there are multiple ports there should be a HUB or router...find it and connect your modem to it

If its built in like running from punch outlet out off the wall, its probably wired differently from IEEE code and maybe the reason its not showing any activity

I would also try a crossover cable if you can get one locally. Best Buy has them (or at least mine does). A crossover cable reverses the transmit and receive lines. If the one of the jacks on the 4 port hub is labled "Uplink" your DSL line would generally go in there. Most certainly, the none of the PCs would be connected to the Uplink port. (Often there are two ports next to each other; that is, the 4 port hub really has 5 jacks but the only one of the last two can be used at any given time. One of those will be marked "Uplink." Others have a single port but some sort of switch to toggle between uplink and normal. Switches (like hubs but "better" - that's a whole other topic) often autosense the connection and flip themselves to whichever way is needed.)
