Default AutoCAD and Access denied errors when working with xref

I have a client who is getting access denied/read only errors when they try to access cross referenced materials in AutoCAD as well as with some other standard word documents. It's unclear to me when the problem started and what exactly happened seeing as how they said it's been going on for over a month now but it wasn't untill last week that they informed anyone about it. Their database is contained in a 'snap' server of which the permissions havn't been changed. A new domain controller was installed at the end of July but it's only used as a DCHP/DNS/Exchange server. They say it happens intermittently but mostly when theres more than 5 users working on the same project. Majority of the local computers are running 2000 Pro while three have XP Pro. The new Domain Controller is running Server 2003 and the old Domain Controller is running 2000 Server. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
