Default AOL Status

Hi,
I am currently using AOL for temporary reasons, and it's really annoying for me to not see the status of their connection. You know how the taskbar (where all the little icons are) is supposed to have these two computers that light up telling you that the connection is working. Somehow, with AOL, Windows does not recognize it as "connected". Is there a way that will make it recognize it?

Thanks.

Proxy all your programs thru the AOL proxy server.

Hi,
Thanks for your post, but I'm not too sure what you mean. I understand that I'm first supposed to start the AOL software and then connect it. I don't get what the "tracert google.ca" is, and what is the "first or second hop"?
Lastly, does "proxying all your programs through the AOL proxy server", make Windows have that "two computer status icon" in the system tray? (I hope you know what I mean.) If so, how do I do this?

Sorry that I really don't know anything. I hope that you can help me out!

Thanks so much!
