Default Another modem?

hey guys. Right now i have DSL through SBC and have a 2wire homeportal on one computer and the rest are networked through 2wire's phoneline network system. What I would like to know, is since i can't move the modem, would it be ok to buy another homeportal and install it on a different system? The reason for this is i need to have an ethernet connection and can't do that without wiring my house with RJ-45.

If it is possible, would i still be able to connect to the existing network? Really, what i just want to do is set up another network which will be two computers... one with XP and one linux. The XP system is the one i'm using right now, but i'm building a linux system that I would like to network with this one. I can't do that without ethernet (at least as far as i know right now). I may just use a phoneline->USB adapter for the linux system, but i dont know if linux will accept that as a network connection or not. Any suggestions? I really wish i could wire the house with ethernet cable, but that is FAR too much work and i definitely dont have the time.

Buying another modem will not provide you with another connection. Basically one modem per each service you pay for. If you wanted to add a second one they would most likely charge you for 2 service fees. There is really no way to beat that system due to them using the Mac address of each modem and activating it. Will a wireless network not work for you?
