Default 5-4-3 Rule?

I'm studying to get Network+ certified and I was wondering if someone could help me out with a question I had on the 5-4-3 rule for networking with hubs.

I'm confused about this rule.

1. Lets say path from node A to node B goes through 6 hubs, but only 2 of the hubs are populated segments. Is the rule broken or is it ok?

its broken... remember its 5 segments, 4 repeaters and only 3 populated. With six hubs (concentrators) it breaks it.

OK. I'll bite. What's the 5-4-3 rule?

means between any 2 sections/nodes, you can have 5 segments that are connected by 4 repeaters/concentrators and 3 of those 5 segments can contain user connections. its more to help keep down the number of hops.

Thanks, killians45!

I Googled "5-4-3 network rule" and found some nice pictures at this link and that one. I wondered why I'd never heard of it before, but it's apparently because it's not much of a concern any more. Back in the day when most segments were connected by hubs/repeaters/concentrators it was an issue. With switches and buffering, the rule is somewhat obsolete, but still worth knowing.

thats true, but for tests (Cisco and if I remember, I think one of the MCSE tests I took had it...) you need to know alot of obsolete crap.

That's funny because when I was Google-ing this before, I ran across this site, which said almost the same thing.
