I've never messed around with Microsoft's internet connection sharing. I always recommend a DSL/Cable router. The router connects to your DSL modem and the PCs connect to it. That way, you don't have to have your PC on just so your mate can use the internet.
As far as the file sharing part goes, that's a long story. Do a search here and in google on file sharing between <your operating system here> and <the other operating system there>. Even sharing between Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Home can be a challenge.
