Ubuntu seems to be good for newbies, try that. USB drivers, no problem. Graphics card drivers, no problem (if you have Nvidia, at least). Compatibility with Windows apps, ehh.... Don't count on it from any distro.

I use Ubuntu. Very user friendly distro. I heard that opensuse is very good too but I never try it.

PCLinuxOS
PCLinuxOS

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.

Kubuntu
Kubuntu - The KDE Desktop

Mandriva
Mandriva One - Mandriva Linux

Mephis
MEPIS | discover the possibilities...

you might also like to try the distro chooser in my sig

I got my free Solaris DVDs too. And I just orderd two 32-bit, and one 64-bit, Ubuntu CDs. They'll be here in 2 1/2 months. I downloaded them, but I heard the CDs come with free stickers.

"So the whole 'We have a list and we're not telling you' should tell you something. Don't you think that if Microsoft actually had some really foolproof patent, they'd just tell us and go, 'nyaah, nyaah, nyaah!'?"
